As we’ve mentioned there are two kinds of medical alert devices, monitors and jewelry. In this section we’ll deal with the monitors. As you probably know medical alert monitors are ideal for seniors and those with disabilities who live alone. A typical scenario is presented in the famous commercial where the older woman who falls and can’t get back up. She is able to use her alert pendant to call for help.
A big question many people has is, who is she talking to? The answer to that question depends on the type of system she has. In the commercial (which is for LifeAlert) she is speaking with a dedicated response center employee. That person is then able to call her local police, ambulance, fire department, or family members depending on the type of emergency. Other alert systems will directly call her predefined emergency contacts (family, neighbors, etc.) and they will be called directly.
The biggest difference in these two options is price. Full time monitoring is a more expensive option, but it comes with the added security f knowing when you push your alert button someone will answer every time. If you are relying on your family or friends to answer the phone in every situation you may be let down.
In the next section we’ll discuss the features available on medical alert monitors and what they mean for you.
